Adult Religious Education

Offerings in this area support the church’s mission of providing an intellectually stimulating haven for open-minded seekers of spiritual growth and the mission of building a strong church community.

Adult Religious Education includes speaker series and covenant groups.   Speakers come from within the congregation or from outside to address questions of religious or cultural interest.  Covenant groups are a handful of church members who commit to regular meetings and exploration of an agreed-upon theme.  They are open to new members at any time and allow their own evolving interests to shape the group’s focus.

Twice a year, in the fall and in the spring, Adult Religious Education offers a six week series of night classes called “Family Unitarian Universalist Nights” (FUUN, pronounced “fun”).   Church members volunteer to lead groups learning more about dance, gardening, parenting, and world religions, to name just a few recent topics.  FUUN nights begin with a potluck supper and end with good feelings and new ideas for all.  Questions about FUUN?  Contact Deb Swindlehurst, Adult Religious Education Manager.

Formal definitions of religion are as numerous, as various, and often as mutually conflicting as there are students of religion. Often such definitions illustrate the oriental parable of the blind men describing the elephant, each taking hold of part of the beast and defining the whole in terms of this part. Like the elephant, religion is a large and complex phenomenon.

The Bible Workbench

The Bible Workbench is a small group approach to sacred texts that is particularly well suited for Unitarian Universalists.  During each meeting we will study a single lectionary selection (reading from Scripture) and ask ourselves - how is this happening in the world today, how is this happening in my city, how is this happening in my church, how is this my story?  Using The Bible Workbench, we look inward to find answers to the timeless questions raised by the text rather than to doctrine or religious authority.

We meet every Sunday five minutes after the first service ends, usually about 10:20AM.  We gather in the Library.
