"Affordable Housing and Homelessness"

Selected as Social Justice Focus

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte has been actively engaged in choosing a direction for our effective and responsible Social Justice actions.  Following a packed-Sanctuary vote on March 16, a single issue was chosen.  You can read more about the vote in VOICES.  You can also read our archived articles and materials  in our Call to Congregational Social ActionOrganization Procedures for Social Justice and past Articles in VOICES here as well as FAQ Regarding our Social Justice Program.

Current Activities:

Save a Life! Give Blood.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte (UUCC) hosts Red Cross blood drives for the Cotswold Community four times a year. You must be at least 17 years old.  Sign up for the next one online at www.redcrossblood.org.  Go to the Carolinas Region link and click on Members for Life.  Find the UUCC schedule by clicking on “Click Here to Schedule a Mobile Appointment”.  Click on “Search by Sponsor Code” on the blue menu bar.  Our sponsor code is 2636.  You may also schedule an appointment, or volunteer to help the day of the drive, by calling Chuck Moore at 704-544-0592.

Walk to End Hunger and Poverty

Charlotte is home of the largest CROP walk in the country, an interfaith effort to raise money for local hunger-fighting agencies as well as the international relief and development efforts of the Church World Service. Money helps local food banks and goes to other poverty-stricken countries for projects such as building wells for clean water and feeding victims of natural and human-caused disasters.  Learn more at the CROP WALK website at www.cropwalk.com.

Feed Families Living with AIDS

On all major holidays throughout the year, church volunteers prepare and deliver as many as 300 holiday meals to individuals and families affected by AIDS.  Names of recipients are provided by MAP (Metrolina AIDS Project) and Carolina RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network).  Volunteer to donate food, cook, package meals, or deliver.  Contact Coleen Beale.

Ride to End Multiple Sclerosis

Our church bike team, the “Rockin' Rollers,” participates each year in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) “Breakaway to the Beach,” a 150-mile bike ride fundraiser for the National MS Society. Over the years, the team has raised thousands of dollars and has been recognized for raising the most money of any place-of-worship team. The team starts training in April. Check out The Rockin' Rollers   group page for information and ride schedule or contact Ed Stokes, team captain.

Donate Canned Food

UUCC operates a food bank twice a month. We serve 25-30 low-income, working families each month. Bring your canned food to the green food barrel located in the office hallway. Especially appreciated are canned soups, canned fruit, peanut butter, tuna and other canned meats. Contact Eileen Hanson-Kelly.

Support our Partner Church in Romania

Our church maintains a relationship with the Unitarian Church in Szabed , Romania as part of the Unitarian Universalist Partner Church Council, an affiliate organization of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).  The goals of our Partner Church Committee include educating the congregation about the history, current affairs, and needs of our partner church; conducting fundraisers to benefit our partner church or its ministry; maintaining a relationship that provides moral and spiritual support (solidarity); and assisting UUCC members in visiting our partner.  To get involved, contact Kathleen Carpenter at 704.366.8623 or email her at kcreuucc@yahoo.com.

Shelter Homeless People

Our church opens our Fellowship Hall each Sunday night from December through March to about six of our homeless neighbors.  As part of the "Room in the Inn" interfaith ministry sponsored by the Urban Ministry Center, we provide our guests with dinner, breakfast and a lunch to take with them in the morning.  There are many volunteer opportunities such as setting up cots, preparing dinner or breakfast, staying overnight, providing a shuttle, or cleaning up early Monday morning.  Please consider helping with one of the many jobs available.  Contact Stokes Adams.

Support Someone Living with AIDS

RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network) is a community resource providing compassionate care for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS, and prevention education for our region.  They deliver these services through Care Teams.  More information about RAIN can be found at their website www.carolinarain.org.  Contact Rita Heath-Singer for details email Rita Heath-Singer
